The Florida Adventure

Believe it or not, we finally made it to Florida.  With heavy rain and strong winds most of Saturday and much of last night, we were uncertain of our departure until we finally pulled out of our site.  We left Rainbow Plantation with heavy hearts at leaving our friends, but headed to Florida with eagerness to see new places.

We got on the road about 8:45 for the 240 mile drive to Tallahassee.  I am glad to report it was an uneventful trip.  I-10 across the Florida panhandle is in excellent condition.  In fact, it appears to have been recently resurfaced.  Best of all, we encountered no construction zones.  Traffic was very light, I assumed because it was a Sunday.  There were numerous rest areas, about every 40 miles or so, and they were all open.

We are now nestled in our site at Big Oak RV Park a couple miles off I-10.  I’ll wait to pass judgement until tomorrow.  I really haven’t had a chance to look around much.  Our site is gravel with a concrete patio area.  There is grass covering the 12 or so feet between us and the next RV.  We have cable and free WiFi.   Gene found the Big Oaks and reported they were enormous.  I’ll check it out tomorrow.

Our plan for Florida is relatively simple.  We’ll spend the next few days exploring the historic district and the State Capitol here in Tallahassee.  Then, at the end of the week, we’ll move our base of operation to Saint Augustine where we’ll stay for a week.  We’re hoping to meet up with Darrell and Judy Patterson if they are still in the Saint Augustine area by the time we get there.  We’ll probably do a day trip to Cape Canaveral from there.  February 1st will find us on the road to Silver Springs where we have a reservation for the entire month.  Centrally located east to west, Silver Springs will be a good base for exploring both coasts.  That’s our plan in the rough; of course, plans change in this lifestyle.  It’s always fun to see what actually happens.

Tomorrow, our plan is to start with a walking tour of the historic district.  According to the website, the historic capitol is open even on MLK day.

Gene and I are ready to get started on this adventure.
