A very short distance from our campground is the Iwo Jima Memorial. The famous statue depicting the American victory over the Japanese on the small island of Iwo Jima is located in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. That bronze statue got its being from a plaster mold. That original plaster mold is the center piece on the parade ground at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. We went there this morning and, after admiring the statue, watched the short film describing the battle at Iwo Jima and toured the small museum. As I’ve said before in this journal, we are truly indebted to the men and women who have so gallantly fought in the armed services throughout our nation’s history. They have enabled us to enjoy our freedom.
At lunch we got the opportunity to finally meet Gordon and Juanita whom we have followed along in their adventure through their journal—Seeing The USA in our Chevrolet. Like Gordon has described so many times, we felt like we already new them from faithfully reading their posts everyday. Thanks, guys, for sharing your lives with us. We look forward to spending more time with you as our travel paths cross.
As you know, I am anxious to get my camera cleaned. I have been unable to find a reputable camera shop here, so will wait a few more weeks until we get to San Antonio. Until then, try not to notice that spot in the photos. Of course, if I were really any good with the computer software, I could get it out of there. That would be just too reminiscent of the seemingly thousands of hours I spent one semester in a computer class trying to create a Trojan Horse animation. My professor would quickly admit that I’m artistically challenged. So, I’ll just leave the spot for your viewing pleasure.
