Chugach National Forest

We have extended our stay at Williwaw Camground for another night.  This will give us a chance to rest some from our big day yesterday and also explore some of the trails around here.

Chugach National Forest is the second largest National Forest in the United States second only to Tongass National Forest which is in Southeast Alaska.  Chugach covers almost 5.5 million acres--about half of the Kenai Peninsula or about the size of New Hampshire.

Today we combined a couple trials to make a nice 4-mile walk from our campground to Williwaw ponds then to the Forest Service Visitor Center and back.  We kept hoping for sunshine, but that didn’t happen until we were almost finished with our walk.  Some of the photos, especially those of Middle Glacier, I took on Wednesday afternoon before the clouds moved in.

At the Visitor Center we watched the movie and walked through the exhibit area.  There is a $5. fee for the movie and exhibits.  The National Park America the Beautiful or Golden Age passes will get you in for free.

Beaver Dam
It was good to have an extra day here.  We really enjoyed our walk.  It was good to stretch those muscles after standing on the boat deck most of yesterday.

Explorer Glacier

Tomorrow I will post the full and complete account of our cruise.  I’m still working on the nearly 400 photos.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for tagging along.
