Saranac Lake

Saranac Lake, just a little northwest of Lake Placid, is a quaint mountain village. It has distinguished itself over time with lots of honors and awards including #1 Best Small Town in NY, 11th Best Small Town in America, and one of the 50 Best Places to Live. Saranac Lake was first settled in the early 1800s but by the late 1800s it had become a health resort of sorts, particularly for the treatment of tuberculosis. Today, with its location in the mountains and along so many lakes, streams, and rivers it is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.

Main Street

It was raining at the time of our visit so we didn’t explore as much as we would have. However, we did enjoy our stroll along Main Street, Broadway, and one end of the lake. One store front that caught my eye was the Post Office Pharmacy. You can imagine my surprise when I read the sign and learned it had been the library. Robert Lewis Stevenson borrowed books during his brief stay here during the winter of 1887-88.
